Ukraine, however, are lucky to be in the knockout stages, and will be aiming to prove that they’re worthy of a spot there. In our Euro 2020 predictions today, we’re going to be giving you our tip as to who we think will progress to the quarter finals of the competition, where a trip to Rome awaits.
Sweden surprised everyone by topping Group E
Sweden surprised everyone by how well they did in the group stages of this year’s tournament. A 0-0 draw in their first game against Spain was closely followed by a 1-0 win over Slovakia and a 3-2 win over Poland.
A 94th minute winner over the Polish saw Sweden top the group, ahead of Spain, and finish on 7 points.
RB Leipzig winger Emil Forsberg currently has 3 goals in Euro 2020, and will be looking to get some more against Ukraine on Tuesday.
The last time Sweden made it out of the group stages of the Euro’s was way back in 2004, so getting to this stage is an achievement in itself. But it won’t be enough for the Scandanavians.
Ukraine are lucky to be in the last 16
Thanks to results in other groups, Ukraine are lucky to be in the knockout stages of this year’s competition.
A 3-2 loss against the Netherlands was followed by a 2-1 win over North Macedonia in Bucharest. However, Ukraine stumbled at the last step and lost 1-0 to Austria, landing themselves in 3rd place and hoping that other teams in other groups would fall short.
Ukraine had never made it out of the group stages in the Euro’s before this year , so this is uncharted territory for them.
West Ham’s Yarmolenko and Gent’s Yaremchuk both have 2 goals each so far.
Sweden and Ukraine have only ever faced each other 4 times in their entire history. Their first meeting only came as recently as 2008 in an international friendly. The game ended in a 1-0 Ukraine win.
The second match between the sides was a 1-1 draw in the Cyprus International Tournament, a now defunct competition. The game went to penalties, which Ukraine won 5-4, earning them their second Cyprus tournament cup.
The third match in 2011 was a 1-0 Swedish win, and their most recent meeting came in the Euro 2012 group stage, which Ukraine won 2-1. Neither team progressed from the group stages that year.

Our Betting Tip for Today
Having analysed the statistics, as well as the history between the two sides against each other and in major international tournaments, we’re going to be backing Ukraine to win, with over 2.5 goals scored.
It’s going to be hard to look past Sweden to progress to the quarter finals in this fixture, especially after their impressive group stage campaign. Holding Spain to a 0-0 draw, beating Slovakia, and getting a late winner against Poland just goes to show that Sweden can quite easily compete against the big boys, Ukraine included. They only conceded 2 goals in the group stages too, and those only came from Robert Lewandowski, who is pretty much unstoppable at the moment.
Ukraine, on the other hand, struggled through the group stages. They were unlucky against the Netherlands, but made hard work of their win over North Macedonia. You would have expected them to beat Austria too, but they fell to a 1-0 defeat.
Despite the sides’ history against each other, we believe Sweden will come out on top in this match, with more than 2.5 goals scored during the 90 minutes.
Unibet are offering Sweden to win, over 2.5 goals scored at 7/2.
