Arsenal’s woes continue
There’s been no secret made of the fact that this is Arsenal’s worst start to a top flight campaign in 39 years. The Gunners sit in 15th place, just 4 points off the drop zone leading many Premier League predictions pointing towards a potential relegation battle. Naturally, the attention seems to be strongly on the future of manager Mikel Arteta, however he appears to have the backing of the board and his players for the moment. Arsenal have lost 4 of their last 5 Premier League games, and haven’t won in the league since they beat Manchester United on the 1st November.
Chelsea’s lack of consistency continues
Frank Lampard’s side won impressively at the weekend with a 3-0 win over a West Ham side that have surpassed expectations this season. However they still sit a point outside the top 4 thanks to back to back losses against Wolves and Everton. Chelsea have already bounced back from dips in form twice this season, and taking on their struggling neighbours could be just the fixture they need to put together consecutive league wins in the league and re-enter the top 4. Winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is said to have fallen out of Lampard’s favour and is headed for the exit in January.
The most recent match between these sides was the FA Cup final back in August, which Arsenal won 2-1, leading many Premier League predictions experts to believe the Arteta Era had begun in earnest. Fast forward 4 months and a repeat of that result looks highly unlikely. Arsenal hosteled Chelsea almost a year ago to the day of this match and lost after going ahead at half time. Given that they’ve averaged less than 1 goal per game so far this season, Arsenal would do well to replicate the feat of even scoring against Chelsea.
