A chance for City to make history
Whatever happens on Saturday, it has been a fantastic campaign for Manchester City with both the Premier League and League Cup titles in the trophy cabinet. However, victory in Portugal would make it the greatest season in the club’s history. The Champions League title has eluded City despite their dominance of the domestic game and this is their first ever appearance in the final.
They come into the game off the back of a resounding 5-0 victory over Everton on Sunday. That game saw Sergio Aguero mark his last ever appearance for City at the Etihad with two goals, as well as City celebrating their Premier League title triumph in front of their home fans.
Redemption for Tuchel?
It’s been a remarkable few months for Chelsea since Thomas Tuchel took over the managerial reins from Frank Lampard. The Blues have qualified for next season’s Champions League by virtue of finishing 4th in the Premier League, something that looked highly unlikely when Tuchel took over in late January with the club languishing in 8th position. Chelsea also reached the FA Cup Final, but succumbed 1-0 to Leicester City in a tightly fought encounter.
Last season, Tuchel suffered defeat in the final of this competition, as his Paris Saint Germain side lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.
The two sides have met twice in recent weeks and it has been Chelsea who have triumphed on both occasions. They defeated City 1-0 in April’s FA Cup semi final thanks to a Hakim Ziyech strike, before winning 1-2 at the Etihad earlier this month. That Premier League victory saw them come from behind with goals from Ziyech and a last-gasp winner from Marcus Alonso.
City’s most recent triumph in the fixture was a resounding 1-3 win at Stamford Bridge in January. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin de Bruyne netted first half goals in one of City’s best performances of the season.

Our Betting Tip for Today
Our Champions League prediction for Saturday night’s final is for Manchester City to win by one goal to nil.
City to edge tight encounter
Despite the array of attacking players at their disposal, the success of both sides this season has been built on rock solid defences. City’s goalkeeper Ederson won the Premier League Golden Glove award for keeping the most clean sheets in the division, whilst the defensive duo of Ruben Dias and John Stones has arguably been the best in the Premier League this campaign.
Given Chelsea’s recent struggles to break down opponents, it’s hard to see them scoring here. For all his industry, German striker Timo Werner has not provided the goals his fee and reputation suggested. It’s indicative of Chelsea’s season that defensive midfielder Jorginho is their leading scorer in the Premier League with just seven.
It all points towards a narrow City victory. They are as short as 1.75 to win, but we recommend taking the longer 6.0 on them winning by one goal to nil.
