Volleyball has become very popular in recent times, with its introduction to the Olympics and great popularity during Rio 2016 especially. Due to its relatively new-found popularity, bookmakers are now offering an abundance of markets to choose from, but it seems we have a lot to learn in terms of maximising our profits when betting on volleyball. Most people will be rather unfamiliar with betting on the sport, and it is always exciting to learn about a new sport, but we urge you to do your research first and to ensure that you do not over-commit in the early stages of your Volleyball betting adventure.

KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THE BIG VOLLEYBALL EVENTS
Knowing how to bet on volleyball does not necessarily depend on it, but knowing the relevance and importance of each competition to certain teams will go a long way in helping you make the most of your bets. It may seem simple, but the biggest competition in volleyball is the Olympics, which of course all highly ranked countries will aim to target and succeed in. Therefore, once they are qualified for the Olympics competition (through success in the World Cup) some more successful countries may dip in form due to resting certain players for less important matches during smaller competitions prior to the Olympics. On the flip-side of this argument, lesser sides are likely to target smaller competitions and ones in which they could qualify for the Olympics, rather than the Olympics themselves, so upsets do occur occasionally. Choose your bets carefully!
MORE FREQUENT COMPETITIONS?
As we’ve seen in our
how to bet on American football
and
how to bet on baseball
guides, paying attention to the annual sports events is essential. More frequent annual events include the World League Volleyball and the Grand Prix Volleyball, both of which see many upsets as the more established countries sometimes focus on the upcoming Olympics or World Cup, depending on which year we happen to be in at the time. Be sure to consider this when planning your volleyball betting!
WHY TEAM-SHEET ANNOUNCEMENTS MATTER FOR BETTING SUCCESS
There is no doubt that form plays a part during competitions, but perhaps in a slightly different way that sports such as football or rugby, so you must consider this when learning how to bet on volleyball. Fatigue plays a huge role in the success of volleyball teams, especially during longer tournaments such as the Olympics, which is why teams tend to rest their players in lesser competitions prior to the big ones. Remember that a team must be accustomed to playing with each other, but must also be well rested in order to perform at their optimum level, so research a team’s number of matches prior to a tournament and whether players have been rested or not. These elements often matter far more than the quality of players in a side, as the team-work and stamina of a team plays a huge part in their success, so be sure to research the line-ups and their number of matches played recently before making your judgements. Be cautious, and always bet after the team-sheet has been announced, as you may be betting on a second or third-choice side, depending on whether the main side is fatigued or have a superior competition coming up.
- Form in volleyball is far different from other sports.
- Research the team-sheets and how fatigue might affect over-played players.
- The quality of the players does not matter as much as most sports, but mostly the cohesion of the team.
YOUR QUICK GUIDE TO THE MOST POPULAR VOLLEYBALL BET TYPES
As with all sports, there are several markets to consider when betting on volleyball. From the standard match winner bets, to outright tournament winners, or even the more specialist such as handicaps and total sets. There are a number of markets to choose from when betting on volleyball, especially during the more established and popular competitions.
MATCH WINNER
As with football, darts, cricket and just about any sport, the match winner is probably the most common bet, although it may not be the most successful for punters. You are simply betting on a team to win the match, which can be risky if you commit hugely to a favourite that ends up fielding a below-par side (due to fatigue or importance of competition to them) and then gets beat by huge underdogs. Of course, as any volleyball betting guide will tell you, there’s a flip side. If you managed to luckily back the underdog for that specific match, you are laughing. There is a big element of risk to this game.
HANDICAP
As seen in our
how to bet on basketball
guide, handicap betting is usually offered (or most interesting) when one side is a large favourite to win. The bookmakers offer a handicap regarding how many sets the side wins by, so ‘Spain -2.5’ for example, where Spain would begin with a hypothetical -2.5 for the sake of your bet and therefore have to win by more than two sets. The underdog is usually given sets in advance, so +2.5 for example, which means that you can win the bet without the side actually winning the match.
TOTAL SETS
Betting on total sets takes away the unpredictability of the match result, as so many upsets can occur, and instead relates to the number of sets in a match will be above or below a certain amount (Over 2.5, Under 4.5 etc.). Similarly to Over/Under goal markets in football, this allows you to bet on how close a match will be or how dominant a side will be, using your new-found research tips.
ROUND UP – YOU’RE READY TO PLACE YOUR VOLLEYBALL BET!
We hope to have introduced you to the general Volleyball betting strategies and that you have more of an idea of how to bet on volleyball. Here is a recap of our most important tips that you must remember:
- Always remember to consider the priority of the competition to the specific team – use your research and this niche market could open a number of betting doors.
- Consider the fatigue and motivation of a team going into each tournament, and whether they really need to win, or are just preparing for the most prominent competitions (namely the Olympics).
- Try each market out, but be sure not to over-commit before you know what you are Doing. There are more technical markets out there, which you should try to avoid, so stick to the three described above first.
