A teaser bet is a variation of parlay betting, it acts as an enhancement to your bet to increase your chances of winning. It is essentially a parlay where you can adjust the odds line to a more favorable spread.

This sounds very appealing, so you will not be surprised to hear it’s a much-favored option amongst experienced bettors. Teaser bets can also open up options for strategies within a game, taking advantage of “key numbers”. Don’t worry if that sounds rather mysterious, our guide will explain everything you need to know!

Where can I find a teaser bet?

A teaser bet option can be found at most of our partnered bookmakers within the list on this website. Sports teaser gambling options are most commonly used for NFL games, but they can also be found in NBA, NCAA Football and NCAA Basketball

Markets for sports betting teaser bets

The most common market a teaser bet will be used in is a spread market. The second most popular option where a teaser bet can be placed would be an over/under market.

Placing your Teaser bet

Next, our US sports betting guide to teasers takes a look at how to place your bet, within the betslip itself. Upon selecting your selection, you will be presented with the option of a Teaser bet or not. Usually, to the right-hand side of this is a plus/or minus button where you can alter the teaser bet options from 6, 6.5 or 7. Why not click these and see how the odds are presented to make your decisions easier?

What is a sports betting teaser?

This sports betting how to guide would not be complete without explaining the basics to you, so here we go. A teaser bet is used by altering spread, or in the other market example, altering an over/under market. Teaser gambling is a lot easier to understand when shown, so we have written a typical example of one below.

  • Chicago Bears (+7.5) at Los Angeles Rams (-7.5)
  • Baltimore Ravens (-8) at Las Vegas Raiders (+8)

Sports betting teaser bets are commonly offered in 6, 6.5 and 7 point Teaser bet payouts. Each of the teaser bet payouts will differ depending on the teaser bet number you opt for.

We’ll use the example from the above game, using a 6-point teaser. As you can see, the teaser bet has allowed the bet to become a lot more flexible and more favorable options are supplied. Let’s take a look at the Baltimore Ravens, as a hypothetical example. No longer do the Baltimore Ravens need to win by over 8, the teaser bet has allowed the bet to be “teased” into a more favorable, and more likely outcome of only needing to win by over 2 now.

  • Chicago Bears (+1.5) at Los Angeles Rams (-1.5)
  • Baltimore Ravens (-2) at Las Vegas Raiders (+2)

How does a teaser bet work?

As you can see from the above example, applying the 6-point teaser bet option to your selections provides a lot more flexibility and increases the chances of winning massively! Now the Ravens would only need to win by more than +2, rather than the more than +8 in the original market, without the sports betting teaser .

What is a teaser betting cost in terms of odds?

You are not going to be surprised to hear that teaser bet options available do come at a cost. Your Teaser bet payouts are going to be a lot lower than if you had used parlay betting consisting of two teams, using the original spread odds. This is the downside of teaser gambling.

However, many people question what’s a teaser betting alteration going to do to my profits – will they decrease? Well, you will almost certainly stand a better chance of winning, but you will need to figure out whether paying the higher cost, for widening your spreadbetting option, is actually worth doing or not?

Number of bets – how does a teaser bet work with stakes

Sportsbooks differ in Teaser bet payouts, but there is usually a standard pay-out for the teaser bets, based on the number of teams you use in your teaser bet.  Here’s some ballpark calculations, below, that you can expect to find from football a football teaser bet, compared to a standard parlay on a spread, without using the teaser bet option.

Based on a two-team parlay in NFL, a $10 parlay on the original point spread (at -110 odds each) would return us odds of $36.44. However, when using the 6-pointer teaser bet above, it is greatly reduced to the combined odds of –110, listed below.

  • 6.0 would return –110 odds
  • 6.5 would return –120 odds
  • 7 would reduce the odds further to -130

When asking what is a teaser betting option for increasing the odds, there is an answer. A teaser bet does not have to be restricted to two selections, as per the above teaser gambling options. You could add further selections.

For example, if adding another team (that was –110 odds), this would increase the odds of the parlay to provide Teaser bet payouts at odds of +180, cumulatively. If you remember back to our original calculation of the straight parlay, without the Teaser bet option, the odds were around +264; yet for this three selection parlay, using the 6-point sports betting teaser alteration, the odds are still only +180.

These luxuries come at a premium!

Strategy implementation within teaser bets

Although some bettors sometimes consider the teaser bet as a sucker bet, it can be used smartly, despite the theories that the odds are too low. This is when key numbers and points totals for common sports within teaser bets must be taken into consideration. Let’s look at the NFL again, for example.

Below, we have listed the points that can be accrued during a game. With careful consideration, these could be used to form some kind of strategy that you believe would suit the team you are betting on.

  • Touchdown = 6 points
  • A field goal = 3 points
  • Safety = 2 points
  • Try after a touchdown = 1 point, if field goal or safety
  • Try after a touchdown = 2 points for the touchdown

It would be safe to say (even if agreeing that teaser bets are sucker bets) that there is a very positive angle that these sports betting teaser bets can be viewed upon, and possibly could without doubt be used in a selective betting strategy.

How does a teaser bet work with strategy?

Key numbers must be taken into consideration, when trying to build a strategy within the teaser bet. The most common victory margins in an NFL game are as follows, listed in order: 3, 7, 10, 4, 6 14 and finally 1.

Therefore, we feel teaser bets can rightfully have their place when attempting to form a strategy within these sports. You may have a different opinion on different games, despite their odds being the same. This would be an ideal time to try to find a suitable teaser alteration that can be applied to a game where you had an opinion.

Are teaser bets worth doing?

Teaser bets are worthwhile, if you can tease a selection to find your own personal opinion. Teaser bets may not provide the best in terms of value, as they are often deemed as being of poorer value than a moneyline bet. For example, you will find the “house edge” will increase every time you add another team into your teaser bet.

The problem is, the bettor thinks they are providing themselves a far better chance of winning, which of course is true. However, at the same time, the bettor is reducing the value of the bet, by increasing the house edge with each additional team added to their teaser bet.

Having said this, if you are more successful betting on teasers, then could this make your betting profits more successful, overall? Maybe a question best answered by testing with smaller stakes?

Conclusion – What is teaser betting, answered.

If you hold an opinion on a game and feel that increasing the spread options would tweak the bet to your specific needs then the Teaser bet may be of appeal. If you’re looking for a big win, however, a straight parlay may be a better choice. A straight parlay will return far more, for a lower stake.

The good thing about a teaser is you widen your chance of winning each game, which will result in winning more frequently. We recommend being mindful that the house edge will increase each time you add further games, but the odds will also increase.
