Online casino Blackjack is a great game and we can play at plenty of trusted online casinos both here in Canada and offshore. But before you even play the game, there’s plenty to consider when looking for a great place to play Blackjack online in Canada.
First of all, before you head to any online Blackjack casino and sign-up, you need to be sure you’re getting the very best deal for your betting. Luckily, we have a huge bank of guides and reviews for you to check out, all designed to give you that very best deal! Take a good look at our guide to
online casino Canada real money, or check out the online casino no download needed guide. And if you have got a casino site in mind, have a look at the review here to see what we thought before you sign-up!
You need to know that playing online Blackjack in Canada is completely legal, whether it’s at a Canadian based online Blackjack casino or any of the hundreds of foreign offshore casinos. However, when you are playing Blackjack online from Canada at foreign casinos you need to pay particular attention to the licences they offer. Look for the most respected licensing authorities for casino gaming – the UK Gambling Commission, Malta Gaming Authority, Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. Sites with licences from Curacao are less tightly regulated and care should be taken before using them for betting.

When looking for the best online casino for Blackjack, you also want to check out the security offered. Look for SSL/https webpages, encryption of webpages, enhanced verification procedures – all of which should be clearly noted at the site.
Don’t be tempted by the flashy sites that look great but play badly and treat you even worse. Transparency and service are hugely important here. Always look at the terms and conditions of any online Blackjack Canada site and see if they are members of organisations such as eCOGRA (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance), an internationally approved testing agency and player protection and standards organisation.
Finally, never be too quick to sign-up for any
casino bonus Canada. Always look at the fine print and see how they treat Blackjack players, sadly you’ll often find out that the wagering requirement contributions from Blackjack bets are 10%-25% – not a great deal!

Playing Blackjack in Canada – everything you need to know!
Blackjack – The Basics
Blackjack’s just the American name for the historical game of 21, which originally came from Europe, probably Space or France. The basic aim is always the same, beat the dealer by getting a better hand, up to and including 21. It was first recorded in 1601 by Miguel de Cervantes (the writer of Don Quixote) in his tale Rinconete y Cortadillo, where the two main characters play Veintiuna (Spanish for 21).
But the modern game comes from early 1800s French casinos where their version of 21, Vingt-et-Undercover became popular. However, it was when 21 spread to the USA by French immigrants that we got the name Blackjack – one of the early variations of the game involved a 10-to-1 pay-out if a player had an Ace of Spades and a black Jack. Sadly, that particularly tasty variant didn’t last, but the name certainly did with Blackjack becoming the biggest casino game in the world.
How to play Blackjack
It’s a wonderfully simple game, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things to learn to make you a better player.
But the basic gameplay goes like this: You place your bet and are dealt two face-up cards while the dealer gets one face up and one face down. Aces are high or low, face cards are worth 10.
If you’re dealt Blackjack (21, Ace +10/J/Q/K), you win with blackjack paying 3-to-2! If dealer also gets blackjack, it’s a ‘push’ – you just get your bet back.
With no Blackjack, you can stand or hit, and possibly double down or split. Stand means staying with the cards dealt; hit gets more cards until you stand or bust. Double down doubles the bet and allows you to draw just one more card. Finally, with a pair you can split, adding a second bet and second hand, with another card dealt to each, which you can stand or hit on.
Once you’ve stood or busted on all your hands, the dealer turns their second card and either hits or stands. There are variations but generally, the dealer must stand on 17+ and must hit on 16 or less. A winning hand pays 1-to-1, a tied hand is a ‘push’ and your bet is returned.
Blackjack variants & live dealer Blackjack
One thing you’ll notice immediately with Blackjack at any casino site is that there’s a lot of different games with a lot of different names. You’ll also see that there’s usually a number of live dealer Blackjack games for you as well.
To be honest, we prefer our Blackjack pure and simple. But we know a lot of players like to dabble with Spanish 21, where four 10s are removed, but to compensate the players always win on 21 even if the dealer matches you, plus bonuses for a 5-, 6-, and 7-card 21). There’s also Blackjack Switch, where you play two hands at once and can switch cards from one to the other. We tend to find most variants are simple cosmetic changes or minor rule changes, with casinos often adding them in just to seem like they offer a bigger range of games.
Live dealer casinos are different though, here you’re playing via video feed with a live room and live dealer. The key thing with live dealer tables is to ensure you’re careful to pick the right table limits for your play.
Top 5 Tips For Playing Blackjack
Understand the odds and probability
Yes, it’s a simple game, but to get the most out of it you need to understand the game, the rules, and most importantly, the probabilities involved.
Insurance? No thanks!
When the dealer’s first card is an ace, you’re offered insurance, costing half your bet. If the dealer gets Blackjack, you get your bet and insurance back. But to be honest, always decline it – it’s simply not worth it.
Skip side bets!
Depending on the variant, you’re going to see a lot of side bets on the table, including pairs and 21+3 poker style side bets. Again, these just aren’t worth it, so skip them.
Double down and split smart!
Always double down on 10/11 when dealer has 2-10. Split on pairs of 8s, 10s, or faces.
Know when to stand and when to hit
Stand when your hand is 12-16 when the dealer has 2-6. Hit when your hand is 12-16 when the dealer has 7-Ace
Online Blackjack at foreign sites – get the payment methods right!
You can and should play at foreign sites – it’s perfectly legal to do so from Canada. But there are a couple of problems Canadian players will find with depositing and withdrawing your cash.
It’s all down to the increasingly restrictive practices of Canadian financial authorities when it comes to offshore betting. Increasingly, credit/debit cards are being refused. And if you bank with the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), you simply aren’t allowed to go online gaming at offshore casino sites with their bank accounts or credit cards.
Finally, if you’ve got a credit card from a US-based company, the likelihood is that you won’t be able to use your card for any online betting.
The answer? Well, we’d recommend looking at e-wallet alternatives such as Skrill or Neteller.
